Who the Heck are these guys?

Lee Moore

Lee Moore was born and raised in Jonesboro, Georgia, the home of Gone with the Wind, just a twenty minute drive south of Atlanta.

Lee came to the University of Georgia interested in literature and Asia. While an undergrad, he studied Chinese and Japanese and majored in Comparative Literature. He spent two years in China, one from 2006-2007 and another from 2009-2010. During this time, he spent a lot of time studying Mandarin and a little time working. He’s lived in Beijing, Kunming, Qingdao and Nanjing and has traveled extensively throughout the country.

Lee also just finished up a year in Taiwan, studying Chinese literature (in Chinese) in Taipei. During his time in Taiwan, he wrote a blog documenting life and travel in Taiwan:

In the fall, after he and Galen finish the Silk Road Hitchhiker project, Lee will be beginning a Ph.D. program in Chinese literature at the University of Oregon.

Like Galen, Lee is an avid outdoorsman. Lee hikes, cycles, kayaks, surfs and has even dabbled in rock climbing. Though he had long been interested in it, he traces the real break-out of his love affair with the outdoors back to the summer of his freshman year, when he worked cleaning bathrooms in Yellowstone National Park. During that summer, on his weekends off, Lee hiked three hundred miles in Yellowstone’s backcountry, falling in love with America’s Best Idea.

With Lee’s background in Chinese and writing, Lee will be the team’s mouth. He’ll be the one who does most of the talking with Chinese folks and he will be writing the posts on the blog that stand beside Galen’s photography.

Galen Burke

Born in in Bloomington, Indiana, the Midwest’s coolest college town, Galen grew up in Thomasville, Georgia, a ten minute drive to the state line and a twenty minute drive to Tallahassee, Florida.

Galen came to the University of Georgia thinking that he wanted to be a dentist, but, as he spent more time at the University, he realized that oral hygiene was not for him. In the process, he began dabbling in photography, art, dance and botany.

Galen’s love of the outdoors was linked with his passion for plants. For several summers, he worked in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, a small park just north of Atlanta, doing plant surveys. The work was always hard and sweaty, coming in the middle of the withering Georgia summer. But he never complained about getting paid to work outdoors with plants.

Galen’s love of art and photography developed along a different path. Working in the art school as a nude model, he began spending more time going out to do self-indulgent projects and experimenting with lenses and antiquated camera equipment. After graduating, he progressively took more and more commercial jobs, honing his photography skills, until he was a professional photographer and videographer. He has shot weddings, music videos, concerts, and a variety of other events. He was the lead photographer for Speed Week, a series of bicycle races across the South that starts with Athens, Georgia’s Twilight Criterium. Most recently, he was a cameraman for “Party Down South,” Country Music Television’s Southern tribute to the “Jersey Shore” (Galen is not responsible for any of the show’s content).

With a strong background in photography, Galen is responsible for planning and executing the visual aspects of Silk Road Hitchhikers. Being behind the camera, he may appear less in the photos, but he is the group’s eyes.

Beginning Now

Galen proves that he is ready for the trip. When he got his Chinese visa, he went out to get a silly, desert-explorer hat, as demonstrated by the selfie below. June will be coming soon, and we’ll be beginning our hitchhiking trip across China via the Silk Road. Hopefully, he will eventually get a real camera, so the trip’s photos can be of a slightly higher quality.
